Love, love, love this. So true for all us wise older women. It was a shocking realization when I went into teaching. What's the saying, "A mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled." ?
Still, speaking of musical metaphors, it's hard to zip it when they're burning down the house. You can't learn from someone else's experience... unless it's written down and someone is wise enough to read it. Maybe this will learn them.
I forgot about all that wasted wisdom while I was teaching community college although these students carried some of that wisdom with them, even though it took them years to realize how smart I was LOL Love you, and love the burning down the house reference. I wish I'd thought of it!!!
so what happens if that zip it becomes unzipped? Are we ever really prepared to pay the consequences? I find it almost sometimes cruel to hold back, but then I think of these adorable little collateral pieces of my own DNA; in my mind commonly referred to as to as “The grand parent. ransom. A.k.a. grandchildren.”. I’m sure you can relate, one wrong move on your part, and, well, you know how that ends…
Oh, Joanne, I love that you said it almost seems cruel to hold back. I've had that same thought because, like you, it's a grandparent hostage situation. You are willing to pay any amount of ransom to keep them safe. I was just saying to my husband, if it were just about adult kids, you could stay back and watch the mistakes and hope for the best. But when grandkids are affected, there isn't a zipper strong enough to keep that advice held inside so maybe you unzip, ever so slightly, enough to let a few drops of wisdom escape. Or as I said, tread lightly. Now go write your book.

Love this story. So beautifully stated.
